In November 2022 Go Again Charity were featured on Rio Ferdinand’s Tipping Point Documentary on Amazon Prime. This Documentary series included an episode on mental health in academy football and beyond.

The final episode of the series explores another issue that has often been stigmatised in football – mental health. It particularly focuses on young players, with recent years having seen an alarming uptick in the number of players reporting problems with depression and anxiety at academy level. This is another area where Ferdinand was able to draw on his past experiences – especially by reflecting on the way that he himself had avoided broaching the subject early in his own career.

“In football, the culture has always been a macho environment, and with any sign of vulnerability or emotion, you’re deemed as somebody who’s surplus to requirements,” he says. “I was probably part of that problem, as I discuss on that episode, and that was the culture back then.

“Whereas I think now, even my own experience is that talking and communicating and showing a vulnerable side of yourself, showing emotion, being able to say that things aren’t okay, that should be embraced. And I think there’s going to have to be an education process for the people that are coaching, or in the education areas of these football clubs, to enable these young people to be able to speak and to feel comfortable and not actually feel that they’ll be judged in the aftermath of showing that side of themselves.”

Who We Are

We are a team of Psychologists, Mental Health Nurses, former and current professional players and Coaches.

We are working together to support the psychological wellbeing of  people who are dealing with mental health challenges. We work together to  provide mental health football sessions.

We also provide individualised support for people struggling within the world of sport or after being released by clubs and academies.

  • We aim for people to have access to  professional support at the earliest stage possible.
  • We offer a fast response and confidential line for players and coaches to contact us. This can be for advice on how to support others or to discuss your own wellbeing.
  • We have developed some wellbeing packs for released academy players based on our experiences and observations of working in mental health for the last 15 years. It provides quotes from people in our services about what has helped their recovery during times of difficulty. We also use examples of people within sport who have suffered rejections and gone on to either further their career in sport or in other fields.
  • We provide links to various mental health resources such as websites and apps. We will research local mental health services for different clubs who express interest. We would like to make these packs individualised to different clubs’ philosophies.
  • We have the support of highly skilled graphic and web designers who have been able to turn our content into professional looking wellbeing packs.
